Riga Port Accepts the Millionth Ton of Metallurgical Raw Materials

The port of Rīga has recently registered a substantial volume increase in metallurgical raw material transit from and to different locations in Russia, Kazakhstan, Europe and the United States. The millionth ton of metallurgical raw materials was transshipped at the terminals of Riga Commercial Port (RTO) earlier this month, officially celebrated on site last Thursday, September 16.

Owing to RTO’s terminal capacity and advanced infrastructure and to its cooperation with the multimodal railway operator AS SRR, the port of Riga has secured a regular and stable container and bulk cargo transit flow. Compared to 2009, this year the transshipment of bulk cargos has increased several times, while the container-handling volume has gone up by 35%. This indicates that the port of Rīga is a strategically important hub to the producers of metallurgical raw materials (iron ore and related products) in Russia and Kazakhstan for international deliveries to destinations in European and US markets.

The official celebration was attended by representatives of the Free Port of Riga Authority, State Joint-stock company Latvijas Dzelzceļš (Latvian Railway), the Ministry of Transport and the Consulate of Kazakhstan in Latvia.

In 2009, the Joint-stock company SRR handled the transportation of container cargos in excess of 10,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units). The company uses more than 1,200 rail freight containers in its operations. SRR is the operator of the freight trains Eurasia-1 and Eurasia-2 to maintain transport connections between the port of Rīga and the key destinations in Central Asia.
